Ferrules

A ferrule is a band made of metal. Ferrules provide a permanent seal at the end of an object to add strength. Common examples include the metal band that holds an eraser on the end of a pencil, or the metal band that secures bristles to a paintbrush. At Knight Manufacturing, we’ve been metal stamping ferrules since our inception in 1975.

The Ferrule Making Process

Ferrules can be made in different sizes and shapes. Ferrules are custom designed for the products they are meant to connect and are crimped to fit those pieces. Every ferrule project is unique, which is why custom-made ferrules are essential.

Ferrules can be made from a variety of materials, dependent upon the application. Common metal ferrule materials include:

  • Aluminum
  • Brass
  • Bronze
  • Carbon steel
  • Copper
  • Nickel and nickel alloys
  • Stainless steel
  • Titanium

While some applications call for non-metal ferrule materials, metals are most commonly used for their inherent pressure and temperature resistances. Metal ferrules are easily created in high volumes using metal stamping processes.

Ferrule Applications

A simple but crucial component, ferrules are used on many common items, such as pencils, hairbrushes, musical instruments, fiber optic cables, hoses, and many others. For electrical purposes, ferrules are often used to protect a cable from the elements or other damage. They may also be used to connect wires and cables. In a variety of other industries, they’re used for packaging, reinforcement, or to help an object resist wear and tear.

Hose ferrules are used across multiple industries, including:

  • Aerospace
  • Agriculture
  • Automotive
  • Firefighting
  • Food and beverage
  • Military and defense
